Bihar Connects…INDIA

Randomness... Randomness by Nimita Pandey Bihar Connects…INDIA Amidst the Foggy clog, the cab drove me out of the Indira Gandhi Domestic Airport Terminal towards the whims and fancies of Karol Bagh, a settlement in Delhi. While the cold winds oozed through the windows, I broke the minutes-long silence and asked: “Haan to Bhaiya, kahan ke hain aap?” The cab driver, with great hesitation uttered: “Madam, hum Bihar se hain, Vaishali district!” I was glad; there was no sense of amazement, as it has not happened for the first time. During many trips to New Delhi, I have encountered lot...

Ghoora- Fireside tales By Ratnaker Tripathy Ratnatar Tripathy-Ghoora-Fireside tales Nitish vs Nitish: the dilemma of development In my earlier piece on Nitish’s bumper victory in Bihar, I was perhaps beginning to lose sight of the runway in a thick fog of hope. Let me make some course corrections here. In the spirit of the Ghoora [fireside] column, allow me to share my worries after sharing my hopes with you. My first worry is ourselves – the educated, the intelligentsia, or the intellectuals, whatever you choose to call ourselves – people with ideas who speak and write Hindi and/or...

Higher Education reforms: Challenges and Prospects

Manish Kumar- The Invisible hand The Invisible Hand by Manish Kumar Higher Education reforms: Challenges and Prospects There is an urgent need to carry out reforms in the higher education sector. India’s gross enrollment ratio at 12.4 percent is well below the world average of 23.2 percent and the developed countries average of 54 percent. There are 370 districts in the country with GER less than the national average! We never fail to mention that we had only twenty universities and five hundred colleges at the time of independence and now we have around 378 universities and 18000 colleges....

Ghoora- Fireside Tales – Nitish, the Listener wins

Ghoora- Fireside- tales By Ratnaker Tripathy Nitish, the “Listener” wins This piece will try to throw light on the political style of our chief minister Nitish Kumar. The common view which even I fully agreed with till last week is that Sushasan is what solely brought him back to power. Indeed, this is no general talk. People are certainly feeling increasingly secure and this security cannot be imaginary. Travel durations in several parts of Bihar have been cut at least by twenty five per cent. There is a clear relation between the creation of the category of Mahadalits,...
