Sunday Editorial- Anna, hold your fast at Gandhi Maidan, Patna, forget Jantar Mantar: and let Delhi come to you!

Sunday Editorial Anna, hold your fast at Gandhi Maidan, Patna, forget Jantar Mantar: and let Delhi come to you! By Ratnakar Tripathy . The idea seems patently absurd, doesn’t it? But look at it hard enough and long enough and it will begin to make sense. Is the purpose of the imminent fast to gather around the king’s palace and wave one’s fists in anger in the face of the deaf ruler? Or does the symbolic act of fasting aim at continuing with an unending conversation among the citizens of India about corruption, misuse of power and criminal inaction? It is probably both. But what is more...

A lovely Sunday in Patna

A lovely Sunday in Patna Ganga as it is ... I wake up early in the morning and raise a hell in the house. I stir up everyone throwing off their warm covers and move from room to room asking the guests to get ready. Everyone seems to respond to the bully boy. In no time we leave for the Ganga banks. Dalits attacked: Poll byproduct?

VIOLENCE AGAINST DALITS: ELECTION BY-PRODUCT? Gurhmiya (Vaishali) Three days after Babulal Ram, a Dalit man in his late 50s, was reportedly beaten to death by three upper-caste men, rural folk  in this district are blaming the fresh incidents of atrocity against Dalits on the Assembly elections. Some observers say the incidents are taking place as more and more Dalits appear to have minds of their own when it comes to voting, and the traditional ‘bahubalis’ are finding it difficult to ‘control’ these populations to deliver votes to their pet political parties. These incidents reflect desperation...

It’s Basic

Clean Water is essential for an aquarium Wordsmith / FRANK KRISHNER   It’s Basic! Yesterday, I visited a bank at Boring Road. There was a notice in Hindi and a sign that told customers not to use mobile phones within the bank premises. Even so, there were three people merrily chatting away on their phones, talking in loud voices. When I pointed out the sign to one fellow, he grinned and said ‘This is Bihar!’ The basic reason that Bihar is backward is because even the educated people do not respect rules. Respect for the rule of law is fundamental to progress in any society. And this...
