Seriously Unimpressed

As one editor aptly put it, after the Opening Ceremony the critics of the Commonwealth games are desperately trying to morph into fans. Well, not this one. First, the opening ceremony as viewed by thousand of ‘mango mens’ [aam admi] ,was certainly a shoddy telecast partially obscured by garish and ghastly adverts. Did the Doordarshan cameras have all the wrong angles or what? The TV commentary was utterly tired and boring. Second, what was that Commonwealth Anthem again? If a cricket mad country like India could swing to ‘Waka Waka’ a month before the Football mahakumbh in South...

From Effkay The Games were opened yesterday. The question is how big a hole has been blown in India Inc.’s collective pockets? An NGO, Hazard Centre has claimed that the people of Delhi will have to pay a huge price for the “development work” carried out for Commonwealth Games and “in the next 25 to 30 years, each one of them will have to pay a debt in form of increased prices of land, basic commodities and petrol.” The report titled ‘Heritage Games’ claimed that countries which hosted events like Olympics, World Cup and Commonwealth Games have plunged...
