Topper Ravish Kumar

Patna/ Gaya: the social backgrounds of Ravish Kumar and Gaya boy Avinash Kumar who topped in the ISc and ICom examinations, respectively this year truly reveal the real Bihar of today – Jitan Manjhi’s Bihar. The Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB) declared the results on Tuesday. Ravish is from a poor background. His father is the sole breadwinner for a family of four, and has been a gas cylinder vendor since 2004. This exam, Ravish scored 425 marks out of 500, putting in 12 to 13 hours of studying, sometimes without electricity, at their two-room house in Danapur, close to Patna.
Both the boys were a success story of the students hailing from humble background. For Ravish of DAV High School, Danapur, it was a dream come true. Son of an LPG cylinder vendor Ashok Kumar Singh and homemaker Pinki Devi, Ravish studied hard to make it to the joint entrance exams (JEE) Advance, but failed to qualify as he got only 108 marks in the JEE (Mains). The Patna district second topper in matriculation (class X) exams scored 85% in the Intermediate science.

Though emerging the topper in the Intermediate commerce (ICom) examinations, Avinash of Gaya College, Gaya, was not very happy as his 79.6% marks will not be enough to get him a seat in either Shri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi or St Xavier’s College, Kolkata, the two institutions he was interested in pursuing graduation courses. Son of Surendra Prasad and homemaker Sudha Devi, Avinash believes logical presentations in own words make all difference. In Gaya, the celebrations haven’t ended at the home of Avinash Kumar, the commerce stream topper. Avinash’s father is a generator operator in town but the adversity at home, and the lack of resources, never dimmed the boy’s spirit. He says, “My parents have supported me all through. Have gone through a lot of problems because of me. I wanted to pay them back.”
