Indira Gandhi Planetarium (Taramandal)

One of Asia's most remarkable projection systems can be seen inside

Indra Gandhi Planetarium is among one of the most visited tourist sites in Patna and is also considered as one of the largest and best planetariums in Asia.

Also called Patna Planetarium, and locally ‘Taramandal’, it  is located at Bailey Road near the ‘Income Tax Golambar’  in Patna with a distance of 8 km from Patna Airport and one and a half km from the Patna Railway Station.

It was established in March 21, 1993 and was constructed by the Department of Science and Technology, Bihar at a expense of about 11 crores.

The main idea of building such a huge Planetarium came into the mind if Bihar CM Satyendra Narayan Sinha in 1989 and It was inaugurated by  Laloo Prasad Yadav the next Chief Minister of Bihar on March 21, 1993.

 The Indra Gandhi Planetarium is among the best Planetariums in Asia, having a state-of-the art projection system.

The present Managing Director of Patna Planetarium is Amitabh Ghosh.

The  Planetarium has regular films shows on subjects related to astronomy. There are primarily 2 shows: the first from 12:30 pm to 2:00 pm and the second from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm. The Planetarium remains closed on Monday.

There are approximately 276 seats in Patna Planetarium and price of the tickets is Rs. 20 whether it’s for an adult or 3 year old chid. The Planetarium is also a venue for  exhibitions and seminars.

    Hi, Greetings of d day n wishing all of you a happy new year.

    on 1st jan 2012 i was there along with my famly to see d state i’con. i want d following issue must be taken care by any common sense, manager.
    1.public toilet was insuffcient and was in such a bad condition too write.
    2.ticketing system was unmanged long q, n associated with misbehavs.
    3.premises is open for red or yellow light govt. cars only, so i was told to park my car at my own risk out of d premises.
    4.show was hardly for 35 minutes, almmost 20 years old informations. it should focus on future possibilities and should show current at least.
    5.chairs are in badely damage condition.
    6. Air condition was off due to cold but there should be arrangement for fresh air, due to suffocation i was uneasy and children were crying.

    hopefully relevant ministry will listen to make it right as state i’con.
