Should Coal companies be made smaller: to increase production of power?

Coal in India: abundant or scarce? For a coal producer trying to navigate India’s complex federal structure, size matters. And the smaller the better. That harsh lesson was learnt by S Narsing Rao, the outgoing chairman and managing director of Coal India Ltd, the world’s biggest coal miner. While Rao has been at the helm in the past two years, Coal India has missed its annual output targets. But in the six years before that, Rao-led Singareni Collieries and the company beat output targets every year. Even though it is India’s second-biggest coal producer, it is small compared...

Sunday Editorial:Walking down the road in Patna, an urban nightmare!

By Ratnakar Tripathy Patna: enforced intimacy! Even as I let my fingers hover over the keyboard, I am aware that someone familiar with Patna may ask – why were you walking in Patna in the first place? My answer is as a biped I like to use my feet by way of instinct! Wherever! I don’t always need a leafy pathway or a scenic hill to let my instinct have a go. But I am writing today about a very purposeful walk – recently I decided to walk the congested stretch from Sultanganj bordering on the old city to Gandhi Maidan, an ample space which leaves enough sky above the ground.  This is a distance...

Omkar Realtors and Mumbai’s slum redevelopment business: a case study

Omkar Realtors and Mumbai’s slum redevelopment business: a case study    Editor’s note: even in an unlikely domain like real estate, it is not just possible but also profitable to maintain the attitude of the retail trader for whom ‘customer satisfaction’ is a very real thing! As real as his bank account and the daily returns. In fact if the biggest retail chains and the traditional corner store have anything in common at all, it is their single-minded focus on customer satisfaction. Such single-mindedness often causes them to ignore employee satisfaction as in the case of Wal-Mart,...

It is a tale about the likely ease of movement in and around Patna – the densely packed part of the Patna city will suddenly become accessible to the rest of Patna as it indeed should be. This would bring the inner city more business from visitors who did not step beyond the Patna Science College along the Ashok Rajpath. It is also a real estate story, ensuring that the big realtors in town would huddle to make deals while...
