Bihar Connects…INDIA
Amidst the Foggy clog, the cab drove me out of the Indira Gandhi Domestic Airport Terminal towards the whims and fancies of Karol Bagh, a settlement in Delhi. While the cold winds oozed through the windows, I broke the minutes-long silence and asked: “Haan to Bhaiya, kahan ke hain aap?” The cab driver, with great hesitation uttered: “Madam, hum Bihar se hain, Vaishali district!” I was glad; there was no sense of amazement, as it has not happened for the first time. During many trips to New Delhi, I have encountered lot of cab drivers, Sweepers, Washer men, who belonged to Bihar and now have settled in the National Capital. Before I was submerged into this panorama, the cab came to a stop and there stood my Hostel. But my Inspection propagated further…
Many Individuals, whether skilled or unskilled, literate or illiterate, have migrated from Bihar to different geographies of the nation. Another

Bihar Connects...Inddia
Disappointing incident: My well Wisher, A Mumbai-based Businessman, started condemning the migration of Biharis, as that has led to regional anxieties and over-burdening of management on other State Governments. Responding to this coarse statement, I could only reciprocate—
“Sir, the people who have been criticising the migration from Bihar, must not forget that BIHAR migrants have become the precursor of majority of the developmental activities, across the country. The Day, Bihar becomes self-reliant, and migrations come to an end, it will be the beginning of many economic issues in every such state, per say.”
Looking into the different peripheries of Bihar’s contribution, what came very evidently was the Robust Industrialisation growth due to cheap labour migration, at different locations like Punjab, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, to name a few. Due to insufficient agricultural incentives, Farmers have been influenced by their Urban counterparts and have migrated to Developing Metropolitans and cities, in order to suffice their urge to enjoy the same comfort and better living conditions. The concrete structures, the skyscrapers and the infrastructural boom, are to some extent blessed by the hard-work and efforts of these migrants. Moreover, if one considers the Skilled Labour community, in the Private sector or Govt. Undertakings, one would find Bihar’s omnipresence across the phyla.
Education Sector has witnessed a Paradigm growth in the other states, due to inadequate high education provisions in the state. The Knowledge quotient of the people of Bihar had not been dealt satisfactorily. As a result, Aspirants in the field of Technology, Engineering, Medical Sciences, and Management as well as of many other such academic arenas migrated to different locations, nationally as well as globally. To my Surprise, Karnataka’s Technical Education area accounts to 55-65% of North Indian Students, predominantly the people from Bihar and UP.
The contribution of Bihar not only accounts to Educational Upbringing and Infrastructural growth, but also in other domains of social, cultural and administrative affairs of the Nations, especially the so called, “Developed States”.
With the resurgence of Bihar’s Socio-Economical growth in the 21st Century and its on-going efforts to acquire the status of a self-sufficient, progressive state, it would not be fallacious to comment that other states might face manpower deficit, both skilled and unskilled, in the coming years. Thus, it’s my earnest appeal to INDIANS at larger, for fostering universal brotherhood, rather conspiring regional lobbying and disintegration. Bihar’s progress reflects the equity of the Country and its credit belongs to all the people of India. Before being a Marathi, Bihari or an inhabitant of any region, one has to understand the duties & rights of being an Indian. It’s our responsibility to amalgamate the positivity of every region, race, or creed into a synergised, co-operative and progressive affair of the state.
Being a Bihari, It gives me a sense of elation to talk about Bihar’s Progress, but at the same time I have no hesitation to say that I feel equally gratified to appreciate the Culture of Bengal, The IT evolution in Andhra, The State-of-art Metro service at Delhi and the Business advancements in Maharashtra….India is Growing, let it grow as One!!!

The day these words will come from a Marathi/ Punjabi/ Delhite (or for that reason any one from such states where Biharis are being targetted), India will be realy integrated . . . from a Bihari . . . its just expected . . . Any way good discussion by Nimita jee
I or my friends havenot been directly effected by the gundaas of shiv sena and BJP! But I vividly remember Late Mr. Pramod Mahajan saying before camera “Bihari yahan padhae karane aate hain, unhe rajniti nahin karani chaahiye . . .!” And mind it, they were doctors from Bihar beaten up by the gundaas called by the local coleagues . . . and Bihari doctors were in jail for 3 days and few for even longer! When a student from Bihar was killed by an inspector already suspended for a criminal activity (Stamp scam of telgi) and re- employed, the home minister says – “goli marane aya tha, goli khaya”.
I dont know whether its right to say here in a public forum, I know it is not, but I am not able to stop myself . . . I realy did not feel soooo bad when his brother shot him from point blank range . . . And when 2 years ago death was roaming breakless on the roads of Mumbai, I was worried (happily) it should not have had a Bihari hand.
By the way, why this happens to Biharis alone? What happened in 2003 at Mumbai with Bihari doctors, might have happened in 1998 with doctors from Tamilnadu. But despite of my persuation and provocation, my Tamilnadu senior did not take the stance! Why? Because people from Tamilnadu (Nadu means Country), are brought up with a feeling that they are safe only in Tamilnadu . . . elsewhere u go on your own risk! Biharis are brought up with the feeling that whole country is their BAPAUTI . . . Whether Bihar and Biharis connect India or not, Biharis are in trouble because they have neglected their “self” (benefits of Bihar/ progress of Bihar), foolishly . . . till we make our own home strong, expectation that people from other states will consider us worth respecting . . . specialy our poor labourers (to me as a doctor every one will have to bow his head) and will stop mocking at us is as childish as myself expecting a marathi manus writing the above article.
The Bihari Medical students had beaten up local students and had written Jai Bihar on campus, Hence the remark from Mahajan, RahulRaj was carrying a gun in a BEST bus and holding people hostage after already having shot two people and that is the only reason why he was shot (a Marathi would not have been spared either) and Hence the comment by RR Patil, Pramod Mahajan dying made you happy then good for you, you showed your calibre as a human being by your comment on Mumbai attacks..
Good work Nimita. You have given a very sensible touch.
India is world’s fourth largest growing economy ( purchase power parity) in spite of this there are slew of issues which has yet to be addressed regionalism and casteism are the two main roadblocks in the development as well as integrity of our country.
Especially biased look at Biharis , we shouldn’t forget it were not only Marathi but a Bihari ,a Punjabi ,a Tamil every countrymen stand out against terrorist attack on 26/11. Every Bihari empathize with the victims.
I didn’t get a reason why people stare at a Bihari when he speaks in Bhojpuri while other nationals use their own language to communicate.
Yes I accept the truth ,I belong to a reason which is undermined by poverty, illiteracy, unemployment, lack of infrastructure. Nevertheless, I can’t allow anyone to make a mockery of the existence of my identity as a bihari. Recalling our past, Magadh ( present day Bihar) was richest ,very civilised , well administerd among all empires in Bharat. Porous and other kings lead to submission but it was Chandragupta who defeated Celucous and stopped his expansion further. Buddha got his spiritual knowledge here . Nalanda was the only worldclass university in India. Gandhiji started his non co-operation movement in Champaran which set a milestone in emerging out from subjugation.
It was the british empire , weakened our socio-economic foundation and remaining damage was done by natural disasters with aid of unjust political malpractices. After getting separated from Jharkhand , Bihar has only dryland and flooded wetland ,no minerals, no industry. Due to political interests no healthy plan was introduced by central government . Koshi , the sorrow of Bihar, periodically wash out livelihood of habitants but neither the state government nor central govt. has taken a corrective action. So in this embattled economic condition upsetting people have had only option to migrate.
To make their ends meet habitant of bihar migrate to other states and get involved in jobs like autorickshaw , hawker, daily wage labours. Many students left Bihar for better education. Nevertheless, the rising regionalism concept put the principle of’ Live and let live’ in vain. It is highly irrational, irrespective of growing presence of Biharis in every wire of development ,even though they get humiliated . we are contributing same as others do , either it is rickshawpullar or daily wage labours at least they indulge in helping society , building infrastructure, boosting economy of that place. Bihari labours are cheap and laborious so their demand is more in industry state like Punjab, Haryana are almost dependent on them. Recently i have seen a advertisement published by Punjab government appealing Bihari majdoor return back to Punjab, they indeed need them because they don’t have manpower and for their economic interests also .
But the era of despair has gone and we stepping up to a new co-ordinate where law of average diminishes. Last five years have witnessed evolutionary change in socio-economic-political platform in Bihar. Recent political event is a landmark in Indian history. Days are not so far when we emerge out as leader in every aspect of development and prosperity. The only thing which cater our aim is to move forward and put our hands together to make our state free from glitches , spread the knowledge of Buddha ,lead our nation to practice fraternity irrespective of region, caste and culture.
Ultimately we are Indian united in diversity. JAI HIND !!
Nice article we need all inclusive growth but it is a very wrong assesment that Bihari labourers drive the nation’s economy, I have been hearing this for a long time now, You’ll be surprised to see a huge amount of labourers from southern parts of India as well. What made the UP and Bihari population visible in Mumbai was their display of strength in numbers, I being a mumbaikar have read banners saying UP hamari hai ab Maharashtra ki bari hai, and Patna hai mumbai abhi baki hai, Very loud (in your face) celebrations of festivals and the latest – UP din, These things are bound to make locals of any state worried. If you venture in to any area in Mumbai with large numbers of people hailing from these two states you’ll see a very aggressive body language, or rude tones, Get in to an argument with a rickshaw driver and you’ll find out. Such traits have made them unpopular in most parts of the country. While writing this I for a second also am not suggesting that all Maharashtrians are polite and that you wont find thugs in them but when you migrate to other part of the country you try to blend in and not be ‘in your face’ just because you have enough numbers to get your MLAs elected. What MNS has done is only reated to the political campaign started by the north Indian Parties, Thus on any given day without the locals being bothered by this issue MNS (with their violence) would have not won a single seat but due to the fact that locals in Mumbai (no just Marathi People) being aware of this problem have won in many places. I hope I have not offended any one, I just wanted to put across an opinion.
Dear Harsh,
)
your concern regarding the regional lobbying across India is Indeed Valid. What me to write this article was not any assault of a Marathi/Gujarati…or say a Delhiite, rather its an Awakening call for Every INDIAN…to get rid of this gimmick and work through an Inclusive mode! Thanks a lot for your comment. We, at bihardays, though being Bihar-centric, yet have always preferred to pose a neutral stand, keeping in view the interests & sentiments of People at large…thanks once again…do keep reading BD!
Dear Ms Pandey
kudos for the communal and sovereign thought however, out of my experience of living with Biharis though-out my childhood (in a boarding school), I can tell you this that, Biharis do not move out of Bihar with an agenda to help the other states. Its just that the situation in Bihar was too over-whelming for a normal person to earn a decent living and thus they were moving out to greener pastures, just as a lot of our Indian brothers and sisters take the aerial route to phoren countries to enjoy better opportunities and a better life-style. They cannot attribute the development of those nations to their migration to the country because the economics were already robust, yes they have participated in the growth, but if they had not arrives a few Chinese, or Koreans, or someone else from a developing economy would have been happy to fill their shoes. I am currently in Gujarat and I completely agree with you that we have a lot of workers coming from Bihar, but also from UP, Chhatisgarh and so on. My best guess is that this will continue that people from weaker economic regions would keep migrating to regions with stronger economics. Potential Difference as they say. However, having said that, the last two paragraphs of the article make a lot of sense, but again in a different context.
